It’s that time of year again! As we bid farewell to 2015 and welcome in 2016 with open arms, we’re taking a fond look back at the most popular images shared on 500px this past year. There are only two rules: 1. The photos must have been uploaded to 500px (not necessarily taken) in 2015. 2. No photographer may appear more than once on any list, so everybody gets a chance to be featured. From ice caves to twin tornadoes; from the menacing form of a shark parting a sea of fish to one of the most incredible volcanic eruptions of 2015. Our Best of 2015 series continues with the Top 10 Nature photos of the year. You won’t wanna miss this one… 10. Shades of Winter Dawn by Anne Schneidersmann 9. Alessandro Gruzza/2016 National Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year When we take a moment to step back and look, the world is stunningly beautiful. There’s beauty in the flashing movements of animals diving and dodging in a dance for survival, there’s beauty in the sky above a nighttime city, and beauty in the creatures that creep through the edge of a dark wood. There’s sadness too, and power, and destruction. All these moments and more are represented in the winning photos from the 2016 National Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year photo contest, which we’ve re-published here. The photos are split into Action, Landscape, Animal, and Environmental categories, with one grand prize winner overall. The photographers’ captions explain the photo and often the search that went into capturing it. View As: One Page Slides

Landscapes 1st Place: Struggle of Life Last year I participated in the Marius van der Sandt Beurs. This scholarship stimulates photography by young photographers. For a whole year I was guided by some excellent nature photographers to realize a project I wanted to accomplish. I chose a natural stream restoration project of a nature organization in the Netherlands. The first time I entered this patch of forest, I immediately saw this little beech. I came back several times to photograph it. One evening, just after sunset, all the light conditions were perfect. I stood in the cold water for more than an hour making many photos while I experimented with different shutter speeds.Jacob Kaptein/2016 National Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year

Animal Portraits 3rd Place (a): Friendship knows no color Two bodies of Empusa pennata in the same plant was the rare scene I found when I visited one of my favorite locations for macro shots. This area is located near a village called Las Rozas in Madrid, Spain. There’s a small stream about one kilometer long where you can find a varied ecosystem with many different types of insects and arachnids. From May to September, I had seen up to four different Empusas alone on their plants, but on this day I was extremely lucky when I found two individuals on the same plant. I took advantage of such a discovery and mounted my macro set and took several photos of this magical scene, where the Empusas seem to play or dance, sharing the same plant like good friends.Jose Pesquero Gomez/2016 National Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year

Nature, 3rd prize singles – “The Power of Nature” bySergio Velasco GarciaColima Volcano in Mexico shows a powerful night explosion with lightning, ballistic projectiles and some incandescent rockfalls, December 13, 2015 in the state of Colima. Colima volcano had a period of enormous activity in July 2015; at least 700 inhabitants were evacuated from their settlements. The volcano created three to six explosions per day with frequent lightning. This particular lightning is more than 600 meters long, so the big light made clear some details of the south portion of volcano. It’s an 8 second shot, time enough to catch the explosion and the lightning.

Animal Portraits Honorable Mention: Crow chasing Puffy Owl This shot was taken on an early September afternoon along the riverbank at Pasir Ris Park in east Singapore. I was hoping to capture wildlife in action when some movement in the bushes nearby caught my attention. Instinctively, I prepared my equipment to capture any action that might ensue. I was fortunate enough to witness this adult crow chasing an adult buffy fish owl right in front of me, proving at once that the crow was the more aggressive species of the two. The entire spectacle between these day and night creatures lasted less than two seconds and exemplified nature in its uninhibited form.Lawrence Chia Boon Oo/2016 National Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year
