What can Photos4artists offer you, the artist? We offer photos designed specifically to be used by artists as reference for their artwork. Any finished artwork is free from any copyright restrictions, unless it is merely a digitally enhanced copy of the original image. Our photos are completely free to download and use as reference for your art. How did photos4artists start? Photos4artists originally began as a photographic library of reference and subject photos for private use. As our library grew we decided to make the photos available to all artists. Ignoring the temptation to post beautiful photos for the sake of their beauty we try to publish only those photos we believe will offer genuine reference and assistance for artists. Many photos have a dynamic viewpoint to add interest, many incorporate the classic lead in or conform to the established design principles. Others portray objects that can be used as subject matter for more detailed artwork, or show objects or features that can be added to other backgrounds to further develop interest.

Mary Pickett via canvoo.com75 months agoAs a new student of watercolor, reference photos are another excellent way for me to study subjects I may wish to use in future paintings. Whether or not I create a work of art to sell, using reference photos gives me the opportunity to explore options. For example, using a photo for a study, I may wish to change the color scheme to produce a particular mood, or zoom in on one object, or practice rearranging the objects for a composition that is more pleasing to me. Thanks for the opportunity to study and practice more! As for the conversation about whether using photos is “real” art or not, I think I’ll stay out of it. Doesn’t seem important to me, at least at this point.

Karen Martin Sampson via canvoo.com75 months agoThank you for posting about these photo reference sources. I often use photos because trying to persuade people or animals, in particular, to sit or stand for hours and days or weeks on end is just not practical and when I pay for a professional model I can only afford a few hours at a time. Finding copyright free images is important to me as I do not want to infringe on someone else’s creative work. I use photo reference only to enhance my own vision, not to copy in detail so I do feel that use of photos is legitimate for artists.
